Well, that my friend, is the follow up I promised you since the last time we spoke (well, I typed, and you read). That’s right – this fat man has signed up for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

Q: What does that mean?
A: This means that I will walk more than 39 miles in 2 days.

Now, reactions at this point should be mixed. Probably a combination of:

3. Wait a minute, 39 miles?!? There’s no way.
4. How can I help?

There is something very satisfying when you work with people who strive to empower women every day. One of the reasons I enjoy working at Avon is exactly that. We empower women. I graduated from INSEAD a few months ago, and I can say that INSEAD provided me with the opportunity to change my life. I started working at Avon a few months ago, and I can say that Avon provides me with an opportunity to change peoples lives.

A few days ago, I had a chance to spend some time “in the field”. What could have been an exercise in understanding “the last mile” became much more than an exercise. It became a relationship. I’m not going to write about the conversations that I had with these women – that’s probably too private and I’d rather err on the side of caution. Instead I will talk about the impression that these women made – something private to me that I don’t mind sharing.

I have seen a lot of powerfully moving sites in my life: Niagra falls, Taj Mahal, Pyramids of Giza. I have been in the presence of some powerfully moving people in my life: CEOs, preachers, gurus, my parents. The energy that these places and people exude gets inside of your – fuels you. But Avon Representatives take powerful women to a whole new level.

So positive, so determined. They are the embodiment of entrepreneurs. They know their customers, they know their products, they live the lifestyle, and they give back to their communities.

I’m humbled by their influence. They say

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery

I think the title and the graphic give you a hint of what’s to come.

I woke up this morning, feeling the spring weather. I had a great night’s sleep. Everything was going well. So I thought to myself, how can I spread this lovely feeling around? 

Then it hit me! I want to pass this feeling on, why not give something away! I have had so much fun in the last few weeks giving stuff away, first the pass to web 2.0 expo in San Francisco, then the ticket to SM4SC. But what next? WHAT DO PEOPLE WHAT?

I’m hooked! I am so addicted to social media, that I just can’t take it, not knowing what all my friends are doing, if there are any parties that I’m missing out on! I _need_ to know!

I’m so moved by those involved in SM4SC so see past the current economic climate to help those in need — in this particular event, the local charity is City Harvest. Partnering up. yeah, that’s right. I’m not just TALKING about it. I’m _doing_ it. Or more accurately, I should say “we” are doing it. Who is the WE? Well.. the WE in this particular post are the folks over at the Web 2.0 Expo!

I’ve been spending some time trying to answer the question.. “really? another conference? SERIOUSLY?” what are you going to do in a conference that is going to be worth attending…

I’ve been asking that question a lot actually, not just about conferences, but clients, and projects, and initiatives in general.

THESE guys (web 2.0 peeps), said, “yeah? well, we’ll see your irreverent attitude, and you want you to SHARE that attitude with people.” (okay, they didn’t say that EXACTLY, don’t sick some legal team on me).. but really.. DUDES. I have looked at their lineup. It’s like the SUPERBOWL of conferences. (you like that? tech dork making a sports analogy?)..

Tapping this blog entry out on my iPhone. But this is an exercise that I am more than willing to tolerate.

I’ve tolerated a lot worse. But woe is me? Hardly. Woe is the stories of those around me.

But they gave tolerated it as well. There is no sadness ok this train.

I am currently on an amtrak train from New York to DC. On my way to a historic event. The inauguration on the 44th president of the United States.

On this train are people with dreams. People with ambitions. Proud people. Optimistic people. And we are riding this train together.

This is the hope train. Of the people. Coming to witness something truely remarkable.

Yes we can.

Yes we did.

And yes, we will come from far far away (some as far away as Africa) riding on this train. Prepared to stand in the cold. Prepared to tolerate. Prepared for hope.
